| Everthing in this intimate, nautically themed dining room is carefully chosen. Owners Martin & Vanessa Lam know what they like, and fortunately they have excellent taste. Martin exercises his taste over the epic wine list too, which has type so dense it looks like an issue of Private Eye and offers an incredible range. aperitifs of madeira and sherry, served with spicy parmesan shortbreads, were the ideal accompaniment to a perusal of the serious menu, which changes daily. The basic carte and long list of specials offer something for nearly everyone,[ though choice for vegetarians can be meagre]. The kitchen produces intriguing flavour contrasts in dishes that are usually brilliantly executed. A stunning starter of grilled quail was an explosion of tastes:the savoury bird made sweet by dates and oranges, fresh by dandelion and lightened with a surprising accent of mint. A seasonal main course of perfectly cooked lamb cutlets was accompanied by new potatoes, peas and broad beans, and a daring mint & wine jelly- divine. Service is knowledgeable and confident; the team at this Battersea classic know that they are selling the real thing. | |
